This is a top notch hat for real winter weather. It definitely keeps your head, neck, and ears, nice and toasty. The alpaca exterior and the fleece interior are a perfect match for the job, making it itch free and comfortable. The cord does a decent job of keeping the ear flaps close to the ears. As far as sizing, here are my comments. I wear a size 7 1/4 cowboy hat or a size 7 3/8 army patrol cap. I could’ve gone either way with the medium or the large. I selected the large. it is just slightly oversized, but it is very comfortable, and the slight oversize allows it to cover almost all of my forehead quite well for when the temperatures are cold. So far, I have worn it several times in temperatures of approximately 0°F and it works great. The small visor does a good job of keeping the sun and snow out of my eyes. Great product.
Hat is well made, soft , but can improve on the design. It needs to extend down from ears and sides of face/neck to under the chin and be secured with Velcro. That will prevent cold air from getting in ears. I can send a picture of the hat that I currently use. Love the alpaca fiber. When don’t want ears covered the straps can be secured on top of the hat .
This hat is unbelievably warm. It kept my big bald head warm at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If you want an ultra warm hat there is no need to look any further. Buy this!
We southerners are not accustomed to the cold weather we are currently experiencing. This hat is keeping my HUGE head and ears warm. I'm loving it. The bill is great at protecting my eyes from direct sunlight.
This hat is good for many different weather conditions. If you wear it with the ear flaps up it's analogous to a beanie style hat and is good for temperatures 30-40 degrees plus. Under 30 degrees I like to bring the ear flaps down but don't tighten cord. In very cold conditions 20 and below I tighten cord up and have used this hat into single digit temperatures without my ears or head getting cold. When you look at it that you're getting a hat that covers a wide degree of temperature variations the near $ 100 price tag to me it's worth it. I use this when I ride my bicycle all winter and my old method was to have several different winter hats depending on temperature. When you figure in the cost of several hats it's basically equivalent to the Alpaca's of Montana Windstopper hat but for me it's easier to just have one quality product that will give me years of usage.
